Is frugal the new basic black? »
Posted by: TechnologyExpert 1 month, 3 weeks agoTo get a sense of the American economy, consider what's in for summer: house parties instead of bar hopping, thrift stores instead of mall shopping, gardening instead of gourmet restaurants.

I agree walden3. recently, i had dinner with several members of my family. I prepared a delightful rice dish with sweet potato (cubed), peas with rosemary, tropical oregano and onion.
I started a small garden in pots right outside my kitchen door. it's wonderful snipping fresh herbs, tomatoes and peppers for a splendid saute. or a beautiful, fresh salad.
I've been looking for salad greens. but, i think it's too hot here.
(I might have to wait until fall for the greens)
I'm about to order organic bulk foods of nuts and seeds to sprout. also, dried fruits that I'll store in my freezer from a company called Jaffe Bros. (760)749-1282

Frugality will be only "in" until gas, oil, food and housing prices are reasonable again.
When they are, (what we think of as reasonable changes, it's more like what we get "used" to), people will go right back to overspending and living beyond their means.
We have no one to blame here but ourselves.

I think we will avoid freezing in favor of canning this year. even going to try drying some and see how it goes. I don't want to use a method of storing where i need to rely on anyone else(electric). Also made the garden about 20% larger this year, Up to about an acre crammed full of veggies now.
Had the whole neighborhood over for the 4th for a picnic ended up with about 80 some there. Everyone bring a dish and we all had a good time.
I offered to till gardens for a few others this spring but they declined, Just no time. Personally I prefer eating to playing golf.

This is a good article that hits close to home--as we are enjoying our "stay-cation" right now. Alot of the things that they talked about-driving less, thrift store shopping, and eating at home are all good things to do that make a lot of sense. However, it is still scary that alot of Americans, like us, are doing these things just to get by.

I know I haven't made any big changes. I already tried to save every penny I could, never had much choice. At least I had gotten to a point where I didn't need to worry about getting by. What really bothers me is seeing what the children are heading into . How are these kids ever going to get ahead?
I thought it was bad back in the late 70's when I graduated with the 20% interest rates but looking back now, I think this is going to be much harder on young people trying to start out. Heck, kids cant even find a summer jobs.

Well there sure aren't around here.
Most of the stuff kids would be trying for are already taken by people which had been retired, needing to supplement there income.
You may want to take those rose colored glasses off a while and take a real look at what is going on around you.
I am in the northeast maybe things are a little better where you are but I cant think of anywhere in this country at the moment being totally spared by the effects of this economy.

wish you were normally silent,
LOL!
On the contrary, I am a very happy person. I thrive on personal responsibility and my willingness and ability to overcome adversity.
But I do understand how people like you can feel so frustrated when you look to others to solve all your problems. I don't worship at the altar of the Federal Building like some people. There are factors all around us over which we have no control. You can either sit there and whine about your lot in life (because it is someone else's fault) or you can pull yourself up and make the best of it. That is truly YOUR choice.
