My opinion is that the article uses a lot of words to defray the idea of oil market speculation as being a major contributing factor to the rapid rise in fuel costs. While I agree that shrinking availability, increased demand, no large fields found recently,(except for a huge find of the Brasilian coast, rivaling S.A.'s reserves), etc is also part of the equation I'm not convinced.
To accept the premises put forth, I would also have to believe that all car manufacturers, world wide, have been caught with their collective pants down at their ancles. I simply refuse to believe that they have just gone on making vehicles without any comprehension or incling that a fuel crisis of the current magnitude was in the foyer of their house. Whatever I think of car manufacturers, I do know one thing, and that is that they aren't stupid. I do believe that they would have been far more advanced in their preparation, research and manufacture of not only more fuel efficient, but also

alternate energy propelled vehicles. I could believe that maybe one or two companies might have been caught unawares, but not the entire industry segment. These things do not happen.
Likewise, I don't think the aviation industry, dependant as they are on fuel, would simply continue bussiness as usual, in complete ignorance of coming events in regards to energy cost's.
I simply do not believe it. I do believe there are forces creating artificial heights in prices, completely ignoring consequences of these actions.
World wide, we may collectively take a giant step back in time, back to the horse and buggy economy, with a few super wealthy individuals moving around as if nothing happened. There are few people thinking far enough what will happen if transportation as we know it disappears. Starvation, hyper crime rates, wars, massive unemployment regardless of education and deceases will reappear. Not tomorow, but certanly in 10 yrs.
I hope I'm wrong, but logic says ..........
