Oil prices fell below $127 a barrel Wednesday, extending a decline of more than $3 in the previous session on a growing sense that record- high costs have cut demand for gasoline and other fuel.

Wonder of all wonders, the marketplace affects the prices better than government intervention.

I guess the oil companies will need another hand out from the federal government then. They need it for R&D and to drill new dry wells.

Is that hissing sound the oil bubble getting deflated?

If speculators get burned this time around, no Bear Sterns-type bailouts for them.

U.S. gas: So cheap it hurts

Relatively low taxes have kept pump prices far below most other developed nations, which some say is precisely why the current runup is so painful.

Despite daily headlines bemoaning record gas prices, the U.S. is actually one of the cheaper places to fill up in the world.

Out of 155 countries surveyed, U.S. gas prices were the 45th cheapest, according to a recent study from AIRINC, a research firm that tracks cost of living data.

Most expensive places to buy gas

        Rank Country Price/gal

        1. Eritrea $9.58

        2. Norway $8.73

        3. United Kingdom $8.38

        4. Netherlands $8.37

        5. Monaco $8.31

        6. Iceland $8.28

        7. Belgium $8.22

        8. France $8.07

        9. Germany $7.86

        10. Portugal $7.84

        108. United States $3.45

--REMEMBER NOW--THESE PRICES INCLUDE ALL THESE COUNTRYS BENIFITS--LIKE HEALTH CARE FOR ALL--

THEY JUST TAKE IT AWAY FROM US IN WAYS..LIKE GAS TAX, AND ALL THE OTHER TAXES WE PAY..ITS JUST NOT ON THE "LIQUID" GAS WE PUT IN OUR CARS..FRANCE, AND ALL THE OTHER PAY THE SAUDIS, AND SUCH THE SAME PRICE FOR OIL AS WE DO..

Take note, Hannibal, that's a rare positive from me (not the first one, either ;)

Gas prices almost always shoot up on the holidays. Even some pay days. I used to work for the a state in its capital city a few years back and filled up my gas tank the day before state pay days. Prices always went up when state workers got paid and came down gradually over the weekend.

While this is good news, I'll be more upbeat when we get back in the low $2 range for gas over even in the $1 per gallon range.

So I wonder if gas prices will go down today?

Everytime the price per barrel goes up, they're up there on the ladder to change the prices seemingly within minutes of the announcement, somehow I think they'll take their time dropping the price at the pump.

I guess I'm just too cynical....

If you want to see the price of carbon-based energy turn around quickly, have the feds commission and finance a dozen new 5,000 MW nuclear fission reactors. The cost of oil would plummet, even against a market basket of currencies... and the dollar would turn and head higher, providing further oil cost benefits to the U.S. These trends would stay in place so long as the markets understood the U.S. to be serious in such a commitment.

Ah, but the cost of uranium would skyrocket. Remember, it is also a non-renewable resource.

Oil was back to to $130 just a couple hours later. It's trading at $129.74 at 12:30.

The trend is up, up, up. Six months from now prices will be higher then they are today and a year from now prices will be higher then they are today. I wouldn't be surprised to see a small decline in gas over the next month or two, but not enough to make any of us feel good about.

There is a man in Indiana, put together a group of investers, and dug an oil well on his own property. Now they have 4 working wells, and I don't know who they sell the oil to, but they are selling it. I have a very small yard, and my snippy neighbers would sh*t a brick if I put in an oil well, but I must admit it is tempting.

Beverly Hills High School may be best known for its famous alumni, its film and television appearances and its affluent students. But one thing it isn't known for -- even by some of the students -- is the oil well towering 150 feet over the sprawling campus. The oil tower at Beverly Hills High is owned and operated by Venoco Inc., located in Carpinteria, Calif. According to the company spokesman, Mike Edwards, the oil wells were already in place when the school opened in 1928."

Is this a trend, reduction in fuel consumption that is? Or is this an anomaly and we'll just go on consuming more and more gas whatever the price?

People...People...please don't panic! I am happy to inform you that oil has returned to $130 a barrel, and will now probably continue to climb unabated. I know...I to was getting a little worried there. Thank God the oil companies came to their senses and, seeing that people have curbed their driving habits and are actually using less petrol, raised the prices back up to cover the loss. Please stay calm! Return to your homes...put out those torches and stow those pitchforks back in the shed. Our extortionist big brothers in oil will take very good care of us!

What goes up must come down. I have to go to town one day this week to buy gas. I waited until the holiday weekend was over hoping I could get it few cents cheaper. I have a horses but no buggies but corn and hay are costing more than gas. I would like to have a buggy but I found out that buggys are very expensive, too. Maybe I can get an old wagon. lol

Would our politicians restrict our access to energy resources in our own country so that they, the politicians, could profit from perceived shortages because of those restrictions?

                            Why yes they would.

Because; they write the laws so therefore they can do that.

Spin this , no one drove this weekend because they had little or no money to afford the high prices or are just sick of this gluttony and greed , no one is buying , except what they have to and the Economy is down .

The reason we are that low is most countries put most of their tax burden within the cost of gas, we don't. So, when gas goes up it hurts, and we still have to pay for all the services on top of it.

Though we do need to keep oil off the volatile speculator market, having the Marxist idea of having the government come in and take over? You are talking the same government that experimented with syphilis by giving it to blacks as well as other things; do you think it will be benevolent as far as gas prices once they see they can have ALLLLLL the profits instead of 4 times what the oil companies get? The dirty little secret the GOV. hides is that when BIG OIL profits BIG GOV does so a well. Pandering works so well with people that lives by emotion alone.
