Money – Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida has been fighting to cut 10 cents from the state's gasoline tax for two weeks in July. Lawmakers in Missouri, New York and Texas have also proposed a summer break from state gas taxes, while candidates for governor in Indiana and North Carolina are sparring over relief ideas of their own.
Obama is right. this is just pure pandering by Clinton and McCain. and its unsound economically.
at least Hillary came up with a way to pay for it, even though it would never get through the senate. while McCain seemed to not even think it through. he offered a gas tax with no way to make up the lost revenue. so, just more proof of his lack of simple economics know-how.
and REMEMBER...
last year the dems tried to push through a bill that would stop granting the oil companies some $15 BILLION in tax subsidies, which would've added that money to our revenues, but the bill died on the senate floor, killed by a GOP FILIBUSTER.
My car was stolen out of my garage three weeks ago. Now I'm beginning to wonder if that might have been a good thing. Granted, I'm 60 years old, but for now I've put baskets on the back of my bike and am shopping by bike. Less wastage in my fridge too.
My understanding is that while the oil companies in this country haven't opened any new refineries in the last 30 years, they have expanded existing refineries several times. Any feedback on the thought?
Quoting Crist: "I'm supposed to respond to the people and try to make them happy."
What a very bleeding heart liberal thing to say. When have conservatives ever been about making people happy. You are to make yourself happy. No person or policy can do that for you. Conservatives, you should know that.
Getting a handout has never made anyone happy, how can a tax break of 14 cents accomplish that?
we been sending oil out of alaska for 30 yrs to foreign countries because environmental groups say it wasnt clean enough to use in this country 30 yrs of our own oil gone, now they fight everytime we find an oil deposit and dont want us to drill for it, unsafe for the environment the alaskan animals dont seam to mind a pipe running across their range.the pollution made in other countries doesnt just stay over that country.it gets here sooner or later
Charge the oil companies a "windfall profit tax." Create government regulations to control price fixing based on what the market will bear.
There is nothing left for investors to play with anymore. The realestate scam has been outed - insurance scaming the healthcare industry is about to end- all of our manufacturing is owned and operated in foreign countries - globalization has done nothing for middle America.
NOW they want to to take away the gas tax that supports Americas highway department. How about making the oil companies pay for their raping of the American people?
This will be unpopular, but Big Oil's profit margin is around 9% which is not unreasonable. How do you determine "windfall profits"? I build for cost plus 15%. Is that too much? Google had a 25% profit margin, but people are not slamming Google!
Too many are confused about the difference between profit and profit margins.
By the way, I'm not an apologist for Big Oil. They could have done far better in many areas, especially alternative energy research which will ultimately benefit them in the end. Just for the record I still hate them!!!!!!!!!!
Before the storming of the Bastille the Pheasants were given rotten produce. In this situation the average working person, that is what is left of us will not be able to get to work as all the money we have goes to other countries and we have no generation of it here. At least McCain and Hillary are smart enough to realize that. It will not break the states to allow some of the tax they receive to be reduced. It will help the citizen gain a some stability. The American way can not function with out income at home.
as an owner of 2 small businesses being on the road moving product is important. I have certainly cut back the travel and am forced to pass on fuel surcharges. Getting a tax break for a short period of time would not help, what would help is if anyone in Washington had some balls and got the speculators to stop driving the fuel prices up so wall street continues to get filthy rich. Wish I bout gas futures 5 yrs ago.

I just saw this on Yahoo Finance, "Oil prices rise to record near $123 a barrel on prediction of $200 oil, supply concerns."
That's 200 bucks a barrel within two years. I saw something else that predicted gas would be at $7 a gallon within four years.
***The thing that really irks me though is that today's run up to record prices is a result of a Goldman Sachs report that says 200 bucks a barrel in a couple years.
The system is messed up when some investment house can release a report that affects price. I bet Goldman Sachs has some holdings that benefit by higher prices.
It's BS when the banks and investment houses drive the market rather then the other way around.
Wish I could do that, "Smith Corona is going to have a huge year due to enormous demand for typewriters." Man, I'd wait a day and then dump all of my typewriter stock.
Your right on the money about Goldman Sachs walden3, they have way too much influence over the Futures Market. Remember in the fall of 2006 when Oil prices took such a plunge, that was the result of Goldman Sachs selling off the majority of its Oil Future holdings causing a chain reaction sell off in the market. Our Commodity Futures Market is broken in a major way and needs some serious reforming.
If you ask me it's another argument that can be made in favor of nationalizing the industry.
Here's some more-
Big Oil is a matter of national security.
The marketplace is an oligarchy.
Big Oil benefits inequitably from our armed forces protecting its supply lines.
Big Oil benefits inequitably from sweetheart land deals on common assets and unnecessary tax breaks.
Big Oil is making windfall profits.
Big Oil is generating war profits.
Give it up, Walden ...
They were discussing oil companies on a show last week
It was mentioned that oil companies only control between 10-15% of the oil that is produced.
The remainder is controlled by countries - the Saudis, Venezuela, Mexico etc
But, how much of refinery capacity do they control?
By limiting refinery capacity is where they get the big profits
But they are expanding existing refineries in the face of declining usage of oil in the US
It is almost impossibe to build new refineries in the US - the regulations and environmental challenges are prohibitive
Would you want to live close to a refinery?
According to congressional testimony by oil executives in 2007, the reason that they do not build new refineries is because they believe the demand for gas will shrink.
Do you want a refinery in your town???
"because they believe the demand for gas will shrink"
Isn't that a true statement?
There is only one new refinery being built and it is on the TX Gulf coast
Several other refineries have been or are currently being expanded
Why put billions into building new refineries if out goal is to move away from gas powered vehicles?
Our current refineries would be more efficient if there were not so many different regional blends of gas required
AmTrak worked so well as an example of nationalizing of an industry.
If you worked on the ground in government every day you would believe that as little government control as possible is a good thing.
Here in WV, for example, the state finally privatized its worker's compensation. In 2 years the groups wages have increased by about 18% and they have been able to build a massive and beautiful office. They are wasting millions of dollars and still can run the operation better while paying their employees more than the state government can.
$200 a barrel oil, will taht move gas prices to the $5 a gallon that OccidentAL Gore wanted in 'Earth in the Balance'?
Wow, we're doing Bin Laden $100 better than he predicted!
