Well, I seem to remember having my classmates call me by a nickname and not my given name. Didn't insist that people call me by my given name until I got older because I outgrew my nicknames and didn't want to be associated with my childhood but as a mature adult.
Did they use your nickname in your yearbook? And was it an "Americanization" of a foreign sounding name, or a more common nickname? These questions seem somewhat relevant to me - perhaps not to you.
