Great story Diffee!
Seems like this is becoming more common, from what I have been noticing.
There seems to be a more generous streak coming from the proverbial "have nots", born without, who have realized the American dream. Folks like Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, etc. And now "Anonymous Friend".
Wonderful heartwarming story!

"Now THAT's an amazing show of giving and kindness"
Agreed. And the people in that neck of the woods can certainly use the help. Christmas came early for them this year

This is a story of someone who was free to earn a lot of money and free to exercise choice as to its disposition. Would the overall effect on the human spirit (of that person and of that community) have been the same if the government had confiscated the money by force of law and then turned it over to that community?

You are assuming, of course, that all anonymous did was take cash from all those poor people and not offer a good or service or employment in return. Heck, he might have even invented something or solved a logistical or organization problem that improved their lives and those of countless others.
Your proposed "government scheme" produces nothing, has no chance of spawning inventions which may improve lives and, ultimately, spiritually impoverishes both the lives of the forced donor and the lives of the donees.
On the bright side, it might have gotten some votes for the political architect of the scheme.

You know, instead of making a lot of people a little happy, that donor could have made ONE person EXTREMELY happy (Me, natch') - and could have done it for -oh... 10% of that cost. Boy, sometimes people are just STUPID! {;>D)=

If only the rich obnoxious would take a cue from this generous donor. He/she should have been a role model for others throughout his life.
Here's a tip, when you pass to the unknown leave some money to your children but not enough for them to live lazily and slovenly.
Secondly, while you live enjoy the pleasure and satisfaction of helping others, you will live a more fruitful existence and your god will acknowledge your generosity.
Thirdly, You cannot take it with you but if you found a way, call me.

I live 15 miles south of Erie, PA. This is a heartwarming story that has made the news in town for the last month. It is definitely a shot in the arm for the charities that will receive the money. Best of all, the charities keep most of the money in the local area, so ultimately businesses will benefit too. We need more donors like that.
