It can't go on forever. But no one expects it to. The plan is simply to pass the problem to the next generation.

This really is one of the biggest issues our country has to face in the next 10 years. If the Dems wanted a sure fire way of winning the election in 08 all they would need to do is rally around this cause. Myself as a moderate republican wouldn't hesitate for a second to vote Dem in 08 if I thought they dems were serious about taking action. But alas they would rather continue this ******ing match over the Iraq war and silliness about some prosecutors being fired....

China is going to need to spend a lot of that money to clean up it's environment over the next 20 years, or face the social and health effects of their years of environmental destruction. By allowing multinationals to externalize the cost of pollution (IE not pay to clean it up), they reduce the total cost of doing business in China. It's short sighted and will have devastating effects to China's future.

Respritory and heart disease are already the number one killer in China now, as a result of their polluted air and the environmental situation will only get worse as they modernize and more Chinese buy cars. Acid rain destroys their arable land and forests. China does not have the medical infrastructure to deal with the massive health toll this takes on their rapidly aging population, which is not being replaced due to the one child policy.

It's much more expensive to clean up pollution than it is to prevent it in the first place. I hope the Chinese amend their ways in time.

The Chinese don't really care about pollution because we don't they don't see it as a problem because we haven't made it a concern. The Chinese people still believe that human labor is cheaper than machine labor and that human life has little monetary value.
