  Satellite radio certainly has a future, but neither of these companies has been able to develop a sufficient subscriber base to cover their outrageous spending.

  The good news is that now there will be only one badly-run company, instead of two.

  This is good news for XM as Sirius was catching up quickly. I'll take satellite over terrestrial radio anyday.

  I would be surprised if the merger goes through. It has a 50/50 chance of not going through. There is a specific rule that says the two companies cannot merge.

  Regardless, satellite radio is the future.

  I've had XM for a couple of years now and I think it's great!

        satellite radio sounds great...well worth the money. I have sirius just for Howard Stern and love it. I don't think HD radio will take off very fast. the equipment is expensive compared to satellite and everyone tries to justify the cost with saying that you dont have to pay for service. but to me if you have to listen to endless commercials (just like on regular radio) then you are paying a price. I would rather pay for the commercial free experience.

          I don't know your age, but the exact same reasonong was used 25 to 30 years ago to justify another medium. Cable TV started out as "commercial free" too, to justify having the consumer pay for something they used to get for free. XM and Sirius might appeal to some, but the fact that they are talking merger usually means that they aren't bringing in the cash needed to stay separate. HD radio will overtake pay radio. HD radios will come down in price. That you can be sure of. Pay radio will probably fizzle out.

            Wait... so is HD radio cable in your example or is satalite radio cable? Because last time I checked cable became huge, even though people paid for what they used to get for free.

            I don't subscribe to satellite radio for the quality, I subscribe to it for the dozens of channels I can listen to (vs a handful of local) and NO COMMERCIALS (sirius)! My locals are nuts with commercials, I can make it to work without hearing music. Will HD radio provide that? No. I pay to listen to music.

              Lets not forget the ability to flip through channels on free radio in the way we flip through channels on tv when a commercial is on. Plus one also has to consider all the portable media (ipod, thumb drives, and yes even CD's)that provide just as much quality, commercial free, music as satellite

                So having to change the channel is a benefit of free radio? That's all fine and well if you live in a city with a lot of stations that you like, but try being a rock fan in nowhere wisconsin.

                As for the portable media, that's great too, but when I want to hear new music that I won't necessarily hear on free radio, then I turn to non-prerecorded means like streaming music stations Pandora or to satalite radio.

  I'm not sure the feds will let this pass. Remember, they stopped the proposed merger between Dish and DirecTV. This would essentially be the same, but in sat radio instead of sat TV.

  Here in Green Bay there is nothing to listen to but sports and right wing talk. I have sirius for the content and love it. I for one, am looking forward to the proposed merger as XM has better technology.

    Depends on if the FCC considers terrestrial radio sattelites competition or not. If XM and Sirius are considered only each-others competition it's a monopoly. If the two are competing with all terrestrial stations, maybe not.

      And how is this different from podcasts or Pandora, both of which are free, and neither of which have commercials.

      I'm not a road warrior, and I'm rarely away from a computer.

        I've got a home reciever so I can play XM on my kick ass home stereo, but I think there are ways of getting Pandora and podcasts on a home theater so in your case, then you might not need satalite radio if none of the previously mentioned reasons apply to you.

  I subscribed to Sirius, payed one year subscription with credit card.

  We were experiencing poor reception in our apartment, so wee did not renew. A year latter we found on our credit card charges for renewal second year (Never authorized by us.)

  The selection of some musical modalities was fine, on one same channel sounded repetitive. Classic music, rock, big bands was OK. Latin was very much Mexican or Caribbean but nothing of the new trends in Europe or South America.

  Talk radio was / -

  I wonder about digital HD radio as future alternative. The receptors are still scarce and expensive.
