I was just about to post this :(

This would be interesting, Google buying it's biggest video competitor.

It will be interesting once we get some MetaJ on this. If we can get some industry people to weigh in on the story as it develops.

"Many industry professionals seem to regard YouTube as the next Napster, ready to collapse under its own weight at any moment."

I see YouTube as the next Napster because of the huge amount of copyrighted material being posted by YouTube users. We all know how the TV, Record, and Music Industries are about their material; 'If we aren't making a profit, you aren't either!'

I've commented on this subject before with Karina Longworth here on the site, and think the same thing about YouTube. The big thing here is that this could potentially be a HUGE ad play for Google, especially if it looks to replace its own Video site with this. But if Google's doing it, there will be a huge crackdown, IMHO, on the copyrighted content that is uploaded to the site.

I figgured. Youtubes ***USERS*** are breaking the laws, not in a since youtube itself, however it could do better to enforce the laws in which it sets.

No offence go google videos, but I don't like them very much =/

The only thing I like better about google video is that they allow videos with much longer durations than youtube (is there even a limit on google?) I would love it if they bought youtube and removed that restriction.

This will be interesting because it may effect their shares in a negative way. Google has been avoiding a lable of "media company" for a while in hopes of a more favorable "technology company" lable. The company gets a higher evaluation in this catagory opposed to the media comany lable. For example, yahoo's evaluation is at 30 points because they are a "media company" while Googles is at 80 points, therefor making there shares more valuable per share. the evaluation points are one of the factors into the value of each share, the higer the points the more theyre worth

The acgusition of a media outlet like Youtube might be what does it for Google o=to finally be recognized as a "media company"

Youtube is a funny thing becaue its technically not worth anything, it loses large amounts of money every single month its in business. It has a ZERO business modle. No plan for any type of profet. Its been valued by venture capalists as high as 9 billion but its a greatly inflated price. Its inflated because for one, its technologuy and its a new technology. 2) because it shows continuous rapid growth. The only way it was ever to be profitbale was to be sold and to become part of a larger company

xxILuvRunescapexx: I agree with you on choosing YouTube over Google video. The content is out there for almost anything I type in, old or new.

It'll be interesting how the copyrights play out. I was listening to WGN last month and they were talking to some lawyers about the issue of YouTube using music, playing TV shows, etc. It seemed the consensus was that the TV shows wouldn't care if it were small clips from the show, but the music industry would probably go wholesale crackdown.

They stated that the only issue would be in parodies of songs. Those lip synching to original material would be the most interesting as to how it played out. Posted videos of original songs would probably lose outright. MADTV style parodies would not be affected (and MADTV has no problem with YouTubers posting clips).

If Google incorporates the whole sh-bang into their site, forget it.

Neophile: Do you want to watch 2 hour movies?

                          Pinto -

                          You are correct.

This is an interesting deal for google to get hold of the content available, as well as the mechanism for acquiring it.

I think that at 1.6 billion, this deal is overvalued.

I love Google! They do like to keep things under wraps til it's a done deal---notin wrong with that. I'll be happy for them.

Man, oh man... I guess Google wants to get sued out of their ass. YouTube has no way of making money without taking almost every video off of their database. How would they monitor such a thing having way more than a million users?

I have thought about YouTube making a profit, but every plan I come up with involves loosing a whole lot of people using YouTube. Media companies would have to allow YouTube some sort of grand license so users wouldn't have to fear lip syncing to N*Sync or making a parady video of Britney Spears.

You are all forgetting 1 thing. YouTube Plays clips in Shockwave format. In otherwords, its not very possible to download the clips. Therefore YouTube is not contributing to Piracy. They may Possibly be in violation of not paying for royalites to the artist. But thats another story. Would be nice to see Youtube stay alive. Hope Google doesnt start charging.
